What is included in my kayak hire?
We at Adventure HQ take safety very seriously. All independent hires are weather dependent. We have a minimum policy of 2 people for all independent hires. A trip planner and full safety briefing will be given, covering weather forecasts and safety. An on-water assessment will be given where you must demonstrate your ability to kayak prior to departure. We will then issue a buoyancy vest, waterproof charts, spray skirt, paddle (plus spare paddles for larger groups), and a water pump.
For additional gear and equipment, you can visit our gear and pricing page for a list of what we have available for hire.
Where can I go?
Depending on your ability, weather conditions, and wind direction, we always recommend leaving from Paihia early morning.
Eastern Bay of Islands: From Paihia you'll make your way to Tapeka Point (the tip of Russell) then onward to the first major island, Roberton Island. Roberton Island offers excellent snorkeling in the twin lagoons, as well as a short walk to a lookout point. You can then make your way to Moturua Island, the next major island, for exploring and bush walking, or continue on to base camp at Urupukapuka Island. The following days can be used for exploring the surrounding islands and waterways, such as Waewaetoria Island, Okahu Island, and Oke Bay. On calm days you can paddle to Deep Water Cove, followed by an hours walk to the ridge line for an amazing view of Cape Brett and the Bay of Islands.

After exploring the Black Rocks and the neighboring Moturoa Island, you'll then head east up the Kerikeri inlet to Aroha Island, which is we're the campsite is located. The following days can be used for exploring the remainder of the Kerikeri inlet and the surrounding islands and waterways.

What's the weather like?
The weather here in the Bay of Islands can change dramatically very quickly; It's important to be prepared for all conditions. Summer is very warm ranging from 20-35 degrees Celsius, with sea temperatures up in the mid 20's. Evenings can become cold, so spare clothing is always recommended. Winter months [insert description]. Full weather forecast should be checked thoroughly prior to your departure.
What clothing do I bring?
When kayaking, we recommended shorts, t-shirt, hat, and sunglasses – and quick dry clothing is always the best option.
At the campsite, warm clothing is essential as the area can get very cold in the evenings – long pants, long-sleeved shirt, warm top, socks, trainers, and a rainproof jacket. No denim, and don't forget your swimsuit and towel. If you're going to be doing any hiking, we recommended trainers, or hiking sandals, as some of the trails are composed of sometimes sharp gravel.
What food do I need to take?
You need to take as much food as you think you will need for the duration of your trip. There are no shops on any of the islands, outside of a small cafe on Urupukapuka island, which sells various cooked foods as well as beverages. Bear in mind that you will be doing a lot of physical work and will likely need to up your food intake as a result. If you are planning to prepare hot meals, be sure to arrange cooking equipment before you leave, as there are no cooking facilities on the islands. No fires are permitted on any of the islands. Be sure to bring plenty of drinking water.
